Children at any age can have high blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends that all children 3 years and older have their blood pressure checked.
High blood pressure in children usually signifies other ailments such as kidney or heart disease. If the primary disease is properly treated the child's blood pressure usually returns to normal.
Some children have high blood pressure not attributed to a secondary cause. Researchers don't have an explanation for this and often call it primary hypertension.
The tendency to have high blood pressure can be inherited. It is more frequent and more severe among African Americans than Caucasions. Researchers don't fully understand the reasons behind the genetic influences.
If your child has high blood pressure a diet low in fat, high in fiber and low in salt may be prescribed. A regular exercise program will surely be advised too. Medication may also be prescribed if needed.
